MULTIPLE DISEASE RESISTANCE IN DERIVATIVES FROM WIDE CROSSES Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • In our studies we have spent considerable effort in searching for FHB resistance in alien species and introgressing the resistance into wheat. When tested for resistance to other diseases it was found that a number of them carried resistance to more than one disease. For example, the line TC67, derived from T. timopheevi originally showing a major FHB QTL on chromosome 2B, also had resistance to stripe rust and Ug99. LineM321, derived from T. monococcum originally selected for resistance to FHB was also found to carry resistance to leaf rust and more recently resistance to stripe rust. One accession of tetraploid, T. carthlicum, named “Blackbird” was originally found to carry a QTL for Type II FHB resistance on chromosome 6B. In additional studies it was found to carry QTL for Type I resistance on chromosomes 5AS + 2AL. More recently leaf rust resistance was detected in Blackbird. In some preliminary studies, derivatives from an Aegilops mutica background appear to have resistance to mildew, leaf rust and FHB.Synthetic hexaploids are an excellent source of disease resistance, a screening of 31lines showed resistance to FHB, Lr, Sr,Yr; many lines had resistance to multiple diseases.
