GENETIC YIELD GAIN IN WHEAT VARIETIES RELEASED IN INDIA EVALAUTED UNDER ZERO TILLAGE AND CONVENTIONAL TILLAGE Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • With the aim to evaluate wheat for yield potential and genotype x management interaction, we assessed 28 landmark varieties with two newly selected high yielding lines in two years and two different managements. The varieties with advanced lines were evaluated under zero tillage (ZT) and conventional tillage (CT) at BISA, Jabalpur, India. The Best Linear Unbiased Prediction(BLUP) assessed the performance of genotypes. Recommended agronomic practices were used during the evaluation. The BLUP is shrinkage towards the mean and increases accuracy. The varieties were grouped in four groups based on chronical order of release as 1970s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. The analysis showed significant difference between the group of genotypes for yield. Overall performance of three varieties and one newly selected line viz. GW366, H02864/Urja, GW173 andGS1012-15/16 (lab designation) performed better over the year in both managements. Under ZT, GW366, H02864/Urja, JW3020 and GW173 performed better for yield, while in CT, GW366, H02864/Urja, GW173, and GS1012-15/16 were the leading varieties/lines. These results revealed that, newly released varieties/breeding lines during 2010-2016 showed average percentage gain of 8.9%, since 1990s while 5.9% gain was recorded under zero tillage. Although, the results indicates slow progress in percentage gain during 2000-2009 (1.7%), there is more scope to increase the genetic yield potential to develop lines suitable for zero tillage.
