IRAFEN-INIA: A NEW FACULTATIVE BREAD WHEAT CULTIVAR FOR NORTH-CENTRAL CHILE Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • IRAFEN-INIA is a facultative wheat variety (Triticum aestivum L.) originating from a cross in the Wheat Plant Breeding Project of the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA), in the Centro Regional de Investigación Ratentué (Hidango experimental station) in 1991 (34° 06'48" S., 71° 47'52" W). It has a semi-erect growth habit in the seedling stage. The adult plant is low to medium height and varies between 80 and 100 cm. The spike is light brown with long awns along its full length. The grain is elliptic, brown, and vitreous. The thousand-kernel weigh varies between 50 and 55g. It was sown in mid-mayt in the Hidango Experimental Station, Litueche, flowering time occurred 145 to 150 days after sowing. On the Mean, IRAFEN-INIA sown under reinfed conditions reached a yield between 0,4 to 22,6 (2014-2017 years) % higher than the control variety MAQUI-INIA. Up to the 2018-2019 season, IRAFEN-INIA has shown tolerance to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis West. f. sp. tritici), leaf rust (Puccinia triticina Erikss.), and moderate susceptible to leaf blotch (Mycosphaerella graminícola (Fuckel) J. Schröt. IRAFEN-INIA exhibits allele 1 in locus Glu1A, allele 17+18 in locus GluB, and alleles 5+10 in locus Glu1D. In accordance with this classification, on a scale of 4 to 10, it reaches a value of 10. This variety does not carry the rye translocation 1BL.1RS, and exhibits the aluminum tolerant I allele for locus ALMT1.
