GROWTH AND YIELD DEPENDING ON REGIONAL WHEAT (SAEGEUMGANG WHEAT) SOWING DATES IN KOREA Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • Recently in Korea, weather changes in the middle and end of October, which belongs to the wheat sowing period, and from November to February that belong to the wintering period are deepening every year. This may change the sowing timing and growth during the wintering period and highly affect yields. This study was, therefore, conducted to deal with weather changes, by investigating growth characteristics after emergence and wintering depending on sowing dates of Saegeumgang wheat, which is a species of wheat, used in making alcohol and noodles in Korea, and finding a proper sowing timing. The experiment was conducted at regional institutes of Chunngnam, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk in Korea from 2017 to 2019, and seven sowing treatments were performed at intervals of ten days from October 15th to December 15th.

Meteorological elements (average temperature, the highest temperature, the lowest temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours, etc.), emergence properties(emergence time, emergence days, etc.), and growth characteristics(plant height, tiller number, the number of branch, fresh weight, dry matter weight, etc.) during the experiment were mainly investigated. Meteorological elements during the experiment were analyzed, based on the Meteorological Administration Data, and emergence and growth characteristics depending on sowing treatments were analyzed, on the basis of the Agricultural Science and Technology Research and Analysis Criteria of Rural Development Administration. Growth situations were different regionally, but yields decreased, as sowing was late. In the Southern province, wheat grew during the winter even when sowing by November, whereas in the central region, it emerged in February when the regrowth period started after wintering.

Although there were differences in the degree of panicle formation before wintering differed, there were only regional differences in the harvest time, regardless of sowing dates.
