Heading date genotype study of wheat suitable for growth in Korea Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • In Korea, early flowering time with high grain yield has been the most important selection target trait in various agronomy characterizations, because the rainy seasons and rice transplantation time is overlapped with the harvest time of wheat. Flowering time in wheat is mainly controlled by vernalization related genes (Vrn1~Vrn4) and photoperiod related genes (Ppd) responding to various environmental stimuli. In this study, heading dates instead of flowering time and the genotype for the flowering related genes were investigated with wheat cultivars in order to concretely know the genotype of the breed suitable for growth in Korea. There were no significant differences in the genotypes of flowering related genes in Korean wheat cultivars except Vrn-B1 and Ppd-B1. Heading dates of Korean land races in genetic resources consisted of 1,969 germplasm from about sixty countries showed earliest flowering times compared to other country resources of wheat grown at Wanju in Korea. We analyzed the differences in flowering related major genotypes and heading date phenotype between domestic varieties and other country resources of wheat. It is expected that this study will be usefully used as makers in molecular breeding of wheat suitable for domestic growth.
