‘Speed breeding’ shortens the breeding cycle and accelerates crop research through rapid generation advancement. We used established light intensity and day length speed breeding procedures in a controlled environment chamber and integrated these with green plant vernalization (in the case of winter wheat), a developmentally-dependent temperature regime, embryo rescue, and dormancy break of immature seeds. Under these conditions 9-10 generations of spring wheat and 5-6 generations of winter wheat can be obtained per year.
