Wheat lines with facultative growth habits provide an efficient and simple procedure for speed breeding of winter wheat Abstract uri icon

abstract

  • Wheat breeders in Turkey have been developing new varieties since the 1920s, but few Speed breeding (SB) accelerates generation advancement by manipulating growing conditions. While the SB process for winter wheat would take a little longer due to the vernalization need. In this study, we developed a wheat line called SN0594, which has a facultative growth habit. It possess good cold resistance as winter wheat, and also could produce the mature seed in about 60 days while planting in the growing chamber without the vernalization. This line has been applied to accelerate generation in the wheat breeding program, a generation can be finished in about 60 days, and up to six generations can be grown in one year. Stable lines with reduced height, bet-ter disease resistance, and earlier flowing traits than SN0594 were developed. The method using wheat Lines with facultative growth habits in speed breeding saves breeding time and re-sources through rapid generation advancement.
