Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a worldwide disease in wheat, which does not only reduces yield by 20%-30%, but also generates toxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON) in diseased grains. The Huanghuai wheat region is main wheat producing region in China. Due to global climate change, annual double-crop rotation system (wheat and corn), straw returning and the lack of resistant cultivars, damage of FHB is becoming more serious in this region, which seriously threatens the national food security and people's health. The scientific and technological innovation group of wheat germplasm creation and new cultivar breeding of Henan Agricultural University has made good progress in the germplasm creation and breeding for cultivars resistant to FHB by studying the identification method suitable for Huanghuai wheat region, germplasm screening and establishment of a composite high-efficiency wheat breeding technology system. (i) Seven identification methods for FHB resistance, including single-flower inoculation, spraying spore suspension, soil surface inoculation, seedling stage identification, regional appraisement, toxin determination and diseased grain measurement, were studied, among which, single-flower inoculation is the most stable and reliable. The treatment of bagging and moisturizing for 4 days is betterĀ in Huanghuai wheat area region. (ii) Three hundred and forty-eight wheat germplasms from home and abroad were screened through resistance identification and molecular detection. Four resistant germplasms, including Shengxuan 6, Ningmai 9, Yunong 901 and Yunong 903, are suitable for Huanghuai wheat region. More than 10 germplasms resistant to FHB were identified from ethylmethylsulfone mutagenesis. (III) A composite high-efficiency breeding technology system consisting mainly of limited backcrossing, molecular polymerization of QTL (genes) for FHB resistance, locally added four generations a year, double haploid, quality parallel determination and screening, disease resistance and abiotic stress tolerance was established. Six cultivars with high yield, good quality, white grain and resistance to FHB were rapidly bred, among which, Yunong 903 and Yunong 903S are medium strong gluten cultivars, highly resistant to FHB (with Fhb1 + FhbX), moderately resistant to crown rot and stripe rust, Yunong 901 approved in Henan is soft wheat for Maotai liquor making and moderately resistant to FHB (with Fhb1), leaf rust and stripe rust, Yunong 902 approved in Henan is soft wheat for liquor making, and moderately susceptible to FHB (with Fhb1), moderately resistant to leaf rust.
