In his 1968 Public Lecture to the 3rd International Wheat Genetics Symposium held in Canberra, Australia Norman Borlaug described “seeds for change” as the result of an interaction between new science and new skills.
New science had led to the production of improved germplasm that addressed production-oriented constraints, and new skills highlighted the people needed to deliver the practical improvements of the future. Both remain relevant today as wheat research and breeding attempts to serve current and future global demands.
Pioneering Australian wheat breeder William Farrer established a scientifically led wheat program in the Canberra environs leading to the release of ‘Federation’ wheat to growers in 1903 (and many subsequent varieties). His breeding methods and targets were future-focused and production-oriented.
They provided an important foundation for Australian wheat improvement as well as providing new genetics to the world. Australia continues to be a major player in global wheat: in supporting research to address production-oriented challenges, in training a new generation of scientists, and in providing high-quality wheat to the global market.
This presentation will reflect on a rich history of endeavours and share current research to define the seeds for change of the future.
