  • TraitSeq, a unique spin-out from the Earlham Institute situated in the agrifood innovation-rich Norwich Research Park, is embarking on a transformative project in the crop breeding sector. Focusing on wheat and many yield-related traits, our project aims to validate and demonstrate a transformative breeding tool to enhance traditional breeding techniques which can be slow and incompatible with the pressing demands for high-yielding, climate-resilient crops. Our innovative approach utilises AI and omics biomarkers to accelerate the breeding process, specifically targeting complex traits that are challenging for DNA-based methods. Significantly, this project aligns with strategic regional and national goals, including the UK's Industrial Strategy and Innovate UK's strategic delivery plan. We aim to deliver a tool to the breeding community that can enhance crop resilience, reduce yield loss, and improve nutrient use efficiency, contributing to the UK's commitment to reducing agricultural emissions and supporting the economic growth of the East of England, a region renowned for its arable farming output. TraitSeq's project stands at the intersection of innovation and practicality, aiming to provide tangible solutions to some of the most pressing challenges in crop breeding. Upon completion, we anticipate establishing TraitSeq as a key service provider in the UK breeding sector, with the potential for global impact. By enhancing the quality and sustainability of the UK's crops, we are set to make a significant impact on the future of trait development in agriculture.
